Data granularity & honesty — read before comparing daily prices vs monthly volumes
Prices are DAILY (FRED). Import volumes & reserves are MONTHLY (JODI World Database — the finest FREE granularity; daily tanker-arrival volume is paid data).
Prices — time window (DAILY, separate axis)
Oil & gas prices — daily DAILY · REAL $Brent + WTI on the left ($/bbl) · Henry Hub US gas on the right ($/MMBtu). Actual prices on the axis — never normalized.
Consumer prices (dashed · own scale · shape only):
Strait of Hormuz — daily transits DAILY · CHOKEPOINTShips per day through the Strait of Hormuz (all vessels + tankers, left axis) and the tanker tonnage they carry (k DWT/day, right axis). IMF PortWatch, daily with a weekly refresh. ~70% of Korea's crude transits here; ~18-25 day voyage, so this LEADS Korean arrivals by about three weeks.
Traffic now vs the pre-break norm · daily transits vs their own 2019→ history:
Daily oil into Korea — AIS nowcast DAILY · LOWER BOUNDVessel arrivals per day (bars, left axis) + the estimated crude volume they carry and the official JODI monthly crude imports (lines, right axis, both in thousand barrels/day) — the daily nowcast against the monthly truth.
free terrestrial AIS · partial coverage (weakest at Ulsan / Onsan / Yeosu crude hubs) · LOWER-BOUND nowcast, not comprehensive. This is NOT customs data and NOT a complete count of ships: it counts only the arrivals the free land-based AIS feed actually saw. Treat every number here as a floor, and read the official monthly JODI line as the truth.

Korea crude imports — customs (fresh) 10-DAY · ~2 MONTHS AHEAD OF JODITop: crude into Korea in thousand barrels/day — the 10-day customs ESTIMATE, the official monthly customs volume and the JODI monthly line for reconciliation. Bottom (same dates): the price Korea actually paid per barrel vs Brent — the shaded gap is Dubai-linked, lagged term pricing.
Customs lead over JODI · what Korea paid vs Brent · 10-day estimate vs its own history:
Import volumes & reserves — shared time window (MONTHLY)
Crude oil into Korea — monthly MONTHLY · kb/dCrude imports + refinery intake (thousand barrels/day). Higher = more crude flowing in / being refined.
Consumer prices (dashed · own scale · shape only):
Reserve level — monthly MONTHLY · M bblCrude in storage (M bbl) with the ~146 Mbbl KNOC strategic-reserve reference; days-of-cover on the right axis. Higher = more import cushion.
Consumer prices (dashed · own scale · shape only):
Gas / LNG — monthly MONTHLY · PJLNG imports · total gas imports · gas demand · gas in storage (petajoules, PJ = 1000 TJ). Korea imports all gas as LNG (pipeline = 0), so LNG ≈ total imports.
Consumer prices (dashed · own scale · shape only):
Rockets & feathers — how long US pump prices lag crude
PASS-THROUGH · weeklyCorrelation of Brent-crude returns vs US retail-gasoline returns at each weekly lead/lag. Positive lag = Brent leads the pump; the pin marks the typical delay, the dashed band is the noise floor. 1 bar ≈ 1 week.
Crude→pump pass-through strength now (rolling 2y corr at the best lag):
Wholesale → consumer divergence — residual-z
DIVERGENCE · σConsumer price minus its β·wholesale benchmark, z-scored. +σ (red) = pump/home price above what wholesale implies (sticky); −σ (blue) = below (lagging). Zero = tracking wholesale exactly.

How to read this
apps2/oilSouth Korea oil & gas: crude & LNG import volumes, the crude reserve (stock) level and days-of-cover, against Brent / WTI / Henry Hub prices.
Volumes & reserves — MONTHLYJODI World Database (oil + gas), Korea (KR). The finest FREE granularity; daily tanker-arrival volume is paid data (Kpler / Vortexa).
DAILY inbound vessels — free-AIS nowcast (LOWER BOUND)A free AIS vessel collector (aisstream.io) runs 24/7, counting laden crude-tanker berthings at Korea's refinery terminals and LNG-carrier arrivals at the LNG jetties. When the pipeline publishes those series the “Daily oil into Korea — AIS nowcast” panel appears above (it stays hidden while they are absent). Honest limits: free TERRESTRIAL AIS has partial coverage, worst at the SE crude hubs (Ulsan / Onsan / Yeosu), so the count is a lower bound / directional nowcast, not customs data; volume = class×draught estimate. Reconcile against the JODI monthly line overlaid on the same chart. Exhaustive coverage is paid (Vortexa >$10k/mo · Kpler quote-only · TankerTrackers ~$100s/mo); build_oil.py stays modular for a drop-in.
10-DAY customs — ~2 months ahead of JODIKorea Customs (관세청) publishes crude imports every ten days (1~10th on ~the 13th, 1~20th on ~the 21st) and the full-month 확정치 mid-next-month — about two months before JODI. The 10-day release carries the VALUE ($M), so the kb/d line is an ESTIMATE (value ÷ Korea's realized import unit price ÷ days); the monthly figure is an official volume. Both are on the “Korea crude imports — customs (fresh)” panel with the JODI line for reconciliation.
Strait of Hormuz — IMF PortWatchDaily vessel and tanker transits through the Strait of Hormuz, from the IMF's free PortWatch chokepoint dataset (satellite AIS, daily values refreshed weekly). ~70% of Korea's crude sails through it on an 18-25 day voyage, so it leads the AIS arrival nowcast by ~3 weeks and the customs value print by ~4-5 weeks.
Prices — DAILYFRED: Brent (DCOILBRENTEU), WTI (DCOILWTICO), Henry Hub gas (DHHNGSP).
